Space means a variety of different things to different people. People not from Los Angeles have their own opinions of Los Angeles to those who are native and even so, a person from Los Angeles may even have a different opinion about this city than the person next to them. If you look up the definition for Los Angeles in the dictionary it states that it is the second largest city in the United States. I believe that LA is defined by what it is made up of not what movies and generalizations have stereotyped it to be. For my ethnography I went to Union Station with my older sister, Liz. On our drive there I saw many different types of neighborhoods within the city. I thought, “ This couldn’t possibly just be LA”, but it was. LA was triple the size that I initially thought that it was.
The further I got into Union Station , the more I felt I was further from home. When my sister and I were in the tunnel system; the place where people wait for their trains, we both agreed that we felt like we needed to start running or else we were going to miss our train back home. I felt that this situation made no sense because we drove there. That experience made me change the way that I looked at transit stations. It made it seem like we are all just a herd of cattle being told where to go and when to do it. As oppose to being educated people with a free will.
Los Angeles has fair shares of downsides as well as its upsides. I feel that Union Station has some of the same disadvantages and amenities. In LA, no matter what part of it you are from, whether it being of a higher economic class or a lower economic class it is easy to get swept up and take the wrong course in life. Union Station is filled with people from all ages and backgrounds, all whom are trying to find there way to somewhere new or a place they call home. They have to remember to stay on course and not get side tracked because then they will miss there train to whatever place they were going. The upside to LA is that you get to experience all different types of people without feeling out of place. LA is a melting pot, it is filled with people of all different types of ethnicities and backgrounds all of them who came to find better life opportunities. Union Station is similar to this because everyone there is either coming to Los Angeles or leaving it. Its fast pace, you need to be strong minded because its easy to get lost just in there, just like the city.
The history of Union Station does hold some meaning to people. It was made before airplanes and automobiles were popular and was expanded by getting rid of pieces of Chinatown. That within itself greatly impacted the city. Right next to Union Station is a place called La Plasita Olvera. Every weekend when I was young my eldest sister; Nancy, Liz, and I would take the metro, get off on Union Station cross the street to get there and dance. Due to that fact that automobiles and airplanes because increasingly popular and more time efficient as time progressed Union Station lost a high percent of its costumers and a higher percent of incoming revenue. In the 1980s it was made a historic place which kept it safe from ever being demolished. I grew up using Union Station to get around to all parts of LA. Until now I did not realize that Union Station was LA.
